Portland’s performing arts calendar includes dance, music and theater offerings — often combined in unexpected ways. Among the top companies are Oregon Ballet Theatre, Portland Opera, Artists Repertory Theatre and Portland Center Stage.
From gritty rock to velvety jazz, Portland’s live music scene offers tunes for all types. Head to Jimmy Mak’s for jazz, Doug Fir for indie rock in a modern-log-cabin setting or the Crystal Ballroom for big rock and indie shows in a classic setting.
For more than two decades, Portland has been the epicenter of America’s craft-brewing renaissance. The city’s world-leading 40+ breweries and brewpubs serve up distinctive sips of made-in-Portland ales, lagers, stouts and more. Portland is also home to an artisan distillery movement and many bars around town serve authentic Portland cocktails made with locally crafted spirits.
Happy-hour deals have become the smart way to explore Portland’s best restaurants at bargain prices. (While enjoying drink specials, to boot.) As an added bonus, many establishments offer both early and late happy hours.
Portland loves its festivals just as much as any other city … perhaps more, if you judge by the dozens of events that populate downtown’s Waterfront Park every summer.
Among the events that keep Portland hopping year-round are the Portland Jazz Festival (February); Bridgetown Comedy Festival (April); Cinco de Mayo Fiesta (May); Portland Rose Festival (June); Waterfront Blues Festival and Oregon Brewers Festival (July); The Bite of Oregon (August); Time-Based Art (TBA) Festival, Feast Portland and Musicfest NW (September); and the Holiday Ale Fest (December).
Two monthly art walks turn Portland neighborhoods into street fairs every First Thursday (downtown/Pearl District) and Last Thursday (Alberta Arts District in Northeast Portland).
